A brief history of Cornelius, NC

Founded in 1893 and incorporated in 1905, Cornelius is the second youngest of six incorporated towns in Mecklenburg County. In the 1800s, the town was an important hub for the cotton and textile industry. Originally called Liverpool, the town was renamed after Joseph Benjamin Cornelius, a principal stockholder of a local cotton mill.

When the cotton mills were closed, Cornelius flourished into a lakeside retreat with the creation of Lake Norman. Duke Power created Lake Norman by damming the Catawba River in 1963, and since then, the lake became a valuable source of hydroelectric power as well as a famed recreational spot with roughly 54 miles of stunning lakeside property.

I-77, which stretches for 20 miles from Charlotte to Davidson, was constructed in 1975 and paved the way for significant growth in terms of housing and population.
